song of the moment #2…

2009 July 3

maybe i’m just adding to the noise. he’s been all over the news lately. people are getting sick of it. before his death, he was hardly relevant. court cases, tabloids, and a guilty verdict from public opinion will do that to you — even after you took mtv and pepsi on your shoulders, released albums that changed the industry, affected culture and promoted causes worth hearing about.

i dare you to listen to man in the mirror and not be inspired. this isn’t michael the star pretending to care. it’s michael, the man in the mirror, realizing he’s part of the blame. we are all accountable. we all know we’re accountable for the things we do that are wrong. not many realize we’re accountable for the things we know that are good that we don’t do.

we need to take a long and deep look at our own hearts. we need to figure out why we think it’s okay to ignore the homeless man on the street, the kids in the shelters, the starving. we need to stop telling ourselves that they deserve it. we need to see this need and fix it by fixing ourselves. when we remove the blinders from our eyes, maybe we’ll see what’s really important — not fame, not money, not glory for ourselves but the happiness of others.

we are truly nothing if we do not love.

gonna let michael do all the talking now.

Gonna make a change
For once in my life
It’s gonna feel real good
Gonna make a difference
Gonna make it right

As I turned up the collar on
My favorite winter coat
This wind is blowin’ my mind
I see the kids in the street
With not enough to eat
Who am I to be blind
Pretending not to see their needs

A summer’s disregard
A broken bottle top
And a one man’s soul
They follow each other
On the wind ya’ know
‘Cause they got nowhere to go
That’s why I want you to know

I’m starting with the man in the mirror
I’m asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself and then make a change

I’ve been a victim of
A selfish kinda love
It’s time that I realize
There are some with no home
Not a nickel to loan
Could it be me really pretending that they’re not alone

A willow deeply scarred
Somebody’s broken heart
And a washed-out dream
They follow the pattern of the wind ya’ see
‘Cause they got no place to be
That’s why I’m starting with me

I’m starting with the man in the mirror
I’m asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself and then make a change
